Anthropic, the American company behind the Claude AI assistant, says that since October 6, 2026, new tasks in Cowork, the mode where Claude does longer jobs by itself, run on the company's own computers. This applies to its paid Pro and Max plans.

The work goes on after you close your laptop, you can start it from your phone, and scheduled jobs run with every device off. Users can't switch back to keeping tasks only on their own computer (source).

What does this change mean for people like the readers of this page: office workers, freelancers, small business owners, students, and anyone who uses or is thinking of using an AI assistant? What happens next, and what should these people do now?

In plain words: Anthropic — American company that makes the Claude AI; Claude — Anthropic's AI assistant, like ChatGPT; Cowork — Claude mode that does long jobs by itself; Pro and Max — Claude's paid monthly plans; cloud — the company's computers, reached over the internet; App Store — Apple's shop for iPhone apps; ChatGPT — OpenAI's AI assistant, Claude's main rival; Tech Dev Notes — website that tracks app chart positions daily

Claude's paid long jobs now run on Anthropic's computers with no way back; only sensitive files need a rethink.

What to do

Disconnect any one of the AIs folder holding client secrets by Sunday, October 25, and run that work in one of the AIs Code.

One AI's long jobs now run on Anthropic's servers for good: the laptop can sleep, but a client's file gets copied out.

Who should do what

What not to do: Don't count on a local-only setting coming back, and don't assume an old task is still local after October 6.

Your laptop can now sleep while one of the AIs works. Jobs keep running after you close the lid, start from your phone, and scheduled ones run with every device off. The old «only on my computer» setting is gone for new tasks.

Your folders stay put, but each file a job needs is copied out. One of the AIs reaches your folders only through the desktop app while it is open. Deleting a job also deletes the copied files, and the training switch is in Privacy settings.

Check your connected folders by Sunday, October 25. If a folder holds anything you promised to keep private, disconnect it and run that work in one of the AIs Code in the desktop app. If your work is everyday reports and research, change nothing and let jobs run overnight.

This is what most AIs advise. Each AI explains it in its own words below.

The answers agree on the core trade. Since October 6, new Cowork jobs on Pro and Max run on Anthropic's servers, and the «Only on your computer» switch is gone. The gain is real: a job survives a closed laptop, starts from a phone, and scheduled jobs run with every device off.

They also agree on a detail many readers miss. Your folders stay on your computer. Claude copies only the file a job needs, and only while the desktop app is open. So a job that touches local files, your browser or a local tool still needs your machine awake.

Jobs that use only online connectors, such as email or calendar, truly run alone. Most answers add that jobs started before October 6 finish on your computer, and that Claude Code in the desktop app is Anthropic's own local option.

They split on how heavy the privacy cost is. Gemini and ChatGPT treat it mostly as a convenience upgrade to test on low-risk work. StepFun, Z.ai and MiMo give more weight to user anger, including a post asking «Where is my data?» that passed 198,000 views. Kimi and Claude stress that inputs and outputs can be kept up to two years. One judge notes that long retention applies to flagged sessions, so treat that number with care.

A few answers add scope and context. Team and Enterprise plans work differently, with admins controlling the cloud switch. StepFun and Z.ai place the move in a race with OpenAI and Microsoft, and note Anthropic's large losses. The practical rule that comes out: decide job by job, by how secret the files are.

They split: Gemini calls it a pure win; StepFun and Z.ai stress privacy anger.
What settles the dispute: Anthropic's data-retention page will show how long copied files really stay.

No clear national split; the AIs from China dwelt more on user anger and rivals.Only the AIs from one country noticed: AIs from China — rival cloud agents from OpenAI and Microsoft launched in the same days.

What is confirmed and what is not

  • Confirmed by a source  The «only on your computer» option is gone and cannot be restored
  • The AIs' conclusion The right choice depends on how confidential each job's files are

  1. 1ClaudeUSA7.9Your folders stay home, but each file Claude needs is copied out

The bottom line: if you pay for Claude Pro or Max, its long jobs now run on Anthropic's own computers, not yours, and you can't turn that off. The gain is real: your laptop can be shut, the job keeps going, scheduled jobs run with no device on, and the same work shows up on your phone and in the browser (support.claude.com).

The cost is privacy. Your folders stay on your computer, but when a job needs a file, Claude copies just that file to the cloud, and it can reach your folders only while the desktop app is open (same page). Jobs you started on your own computer before October 6 can still be finished there (same page). The help page says it was updated today, so check it again before relying on any detail.

For freelancers and small businesses with client contracts, tax papers or health records, this is a different decision. Each file Claude opens now passes through someone else's servers, and a post with key numbers, shared widely on X, put the time inputs and outputs may be kept at up to 2 years (x.com). Two settings are worth knowing.

Whether your chats help train Claude follows the "Help improve our AI models" switch in Privacy settings, and deleting a job also deletes the copied files (support.claude.com). Anthropic's own answer for work that must never leave your machine is Claude Code, a separate tool in the same desktop app. It runs on your computer, but your old projects and scheduled jobs do not carry over to it (max.nardit.com).

For company users the picture is still shifting. Today, October 23, Anthropic merged chat and Cowork for its business-plan customers (seekingalpha.com). On those plans, IT staff control the cloud switch: on by default for Team, off by default for Enterprise (max.nardit.com).

Sort your Claude folders this weekend, by Sunday, October 25, if you are a Pro or Max user. If a connected folder holds anything you would not email to a stranger, disconnect it and move that work to Claude Code. To bring a job along, use "Download task data" and then type /port-task-data in Claude Code. You can also save everything with "Export your Cowork data" (support.claude.com).

If your folders hold only everyday work, do nothing. Just enjoy starting jobs from your phone and letting them finish overnight. Students and anyone still deciding should know the app is popular but not on top in the US. It ranks #9 among free iPhone apps today, and its best in 45 days is #6 (techdevnotes.com).

  2. 2KimiChina7.6Claude keeps working after you close the laptop — but its copy of your files can stay on Anthropic's servers for two years

For ordinary Claude users, the practical gain is real: jobs started on one device can be picked up on another, scheduled tasks run with every device switched off, and a long report no longer dies when you close the lid.

The cost is that new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max now run on Anthropic's servers, and the old "Only on your computer" switch is gone for good — when a cloud task needs one of your files, a copy of that file passes through Anthropic's systems (support.claude.com, smartscope.blog).

Anthropic says Claude reaches only folders you connected, through the desktop app, only while it is open, and that fetched copies are deleted when you delete the session, per its data retention practices. Its Privacy Center says inputs and outputs are kept up to 2 years, and trust-and-safety scores on flagged sessions up to 7 years (x.com).

Freelancers and small business owners gain the most: the work Anthropic says people actually hand Cowork — 33.4% business process and operations, 16.4% content creation, over 90% non-coding — now runs unattended, which is exactly the paperwork category most solo workers use (zdnet.com).

Anyone handling client files under a confidentiality promise — lawyers, accountants, consultants — has the opposite step: those files should no longer go into Cowork, because the local-only option no longer exists and Anthropic itself points people who need local processing to Claude Code in the desktop app instead (medium.com).

Do this today, Friday evening: check Settings > Privacy in your Claude account, decide on the "Help improve our AI models" toggle, and review which folders you have connected to Cowork. If you have tasks running right now that you want kept local, leave them — tasks started before October 6 keep running on your computer until finished, with a banner saying so.

If a job must never leave your machine, use Claude Code in the desktop app for new work and turn off Memory from the plus-sign menu before starting a sensitive task; if convenience matters more, just start tasks as usual and check them from your phone (support.claude.com, pasqualepillitteri.it).

  3. 3Z.aiChina7.6'Where is my data?' hit 198,000 views the day Claude went cloud-only

The bottom line: the option of keeping AI work off other people's computers is gone for paid Claude users, and the trade is convenience for control — since October 6 every new job on a Pro or Max plan runs on Anthropic's servers, so it survives a closed laptop, can be started and checked from your phone, and scheduled jobs run with every device off (support.claude.com).

Your folders themselves never leave your machine, and Claude is supposed to copy just the one file a task needs, and only while the desktop app is open (same page). Anthropic's own safety page now says it straight: work in these sessions, including any local file it opens, is 'processed on Anthropic's servers rather than staying on your computer' (support.claude.com).

For freelancers and small firms who handle client papers, that is the real change: a client's file can now travel to Anthropic's data centers, though the company says the copies are deleted when you delete the session (same help page) — and people noticed, because an X post asking 'Where is my data, and who can access it?' passed 198,000 views the day the notice went up (cellcog.ai).

In Claude user groups, people are already hunting for local alternatives and asking whether this is a 'cloud-first, lock-in path' (facebook.com). Anthropic's own escape door is Claude Code in the desktop app, which still runs on your machine and keeps your folders and history there (support.claude.com).

Check, everyone paying for Claude Pro or Max, before you hand over your next new task — by Sunday, October 25: if the job can live on Anthropic's computers, do nothing, it just runs there now; if it touches files a client would not want copied, run that job in Claude Code on the desktop instead, and download the data from any local task still running, which stays yours until it's done (support.claude.com).

The perk you'll feel first: a scheduled overnight job no longer dies because your laptop went to sleep (medium.com).

  4. 4MetaUSA7.5Laptop closed, job still running — and you can't move it back

You gain a true background worker, but you lose the stay-on-my-computer switch. A long report, inbox cleanup or file re-org can finish after you shut the lid, because the work now runs on Anthropic's computers and follows your account to web and phone. That also means your files are no longer processed only on your own machine, which matters if you handle private work.

For freelancers, small shops and students with client data, contracts or research under NDA, the shift changes risk, not just convenience. Your folders stay on your computer and Claude reaches them only through the desktop app while it is open, and copies it fetches are deleted when you delete the session.

Scheduled jobs that only need Gmail or Calendar connectors can run with every device off, but any job that touches local files, your browser or a local tool needs that Mac awake.

Audit your setup tonight, office workers, Friday October 23: if you need work to stay only on your laptop, move new private jobs to Claude Code and limit trusted folders; if not, keep the desktop app open for file access, turn on trusted folders for your projects, and start or check tasks from your phone. Old tasks you started before October 6 stay local until done, so finish them there before you migrate.

  5. 5MiMoChina7.5Your folders never leave the laptop; Claude copies one file at a time

Bottom line: Claude's long-running jobs just moved from your laptop to Anthropic's own computers, and for most busy people that is a win. Since October 6, new Cowork jobs on Pro and Max plans keep going after you close the lid, you can start them from your phone, and jobs you set to run on their own work with every device switched off.

One detail surprises many: your folders stay on your laptop — Claude copies just the one file a job needs, and only while the desktop app is open.

But there is no going back: the "Only on your computer" switch is gone, and new jobs run on Anthropic's servers whether you like it or not. That matters for freelancers, bookkeepers, and anyone who promised a client to keep files secret: one copied file can break that promise, so those jobs should move to Claude Code in the desktop app, which still runs only on your machine.

Big company teams are out of this for now — the change names Pro and Max only, and Team and Enterprise plans keep working as before; workers there should watch for the next notice, not today's rules.

Check your connected folders by Sunday, October 25, everyone who pays for Claude: if any folder holds files you promised to keep secret, run those jobs in Claude Code on the desktop app and keep that folder out of Cowork; if not, connect your folders and let Claude work overnight — that is the part worth having. Before you change anything, tap "Export your Cowork data" so a copy of your work stays with you.

Its own forecast: Anthropic brings back a way to run new Cowork tasks only on the user's own computer (a returning setting or a plan that includes it), announced by that date — 25% chance by Jan 31, 2027

  1. 6StepFunChina7.3Users call it forced cloud storage; Anthropic calls it a temporary sandbox

The one-way door is already shut: since October 6, 2026 every new Cowork task on Pro and Max runs on Anthropic's own machines, and the setting that kept tasks on your own computer was removed from Settings > General (support.claude.com).

The gain is real work you don't have to watch — you can start a job from your phone, close the laptop, and find it finished, and scheduled jobs run with every device switched off (The Verge, NBC News). But the files on your disk stay on your disk: when a task needs a local file or your browser, Claude reaches your computer through the desktop app, only for folders you connected, and only while the app is open (support.claude.com).

This lands hardest on people whose contracts forbid their documents leaving their own machine — freelancers with client files, accountants with tax data, anyone in health or law — and user threads are full of exactly that anger, with the setting's removal called a security and privacy problem (Reddit).

It also sharpens a race that got crowded in days: OpenAI shipped ChatGPT Work and Microsoft took its Copilot workspace to general release in the same stretch, all selling the same promise of finished work rather than answers (Futurum, beri.net). And it is a business bet, not just a convenience: Anthropic runs those machines itself, and Reuters reported a net loss of $80.7 billion for the first half of 2026.

Check your connected folders tonight, Friday, October 23: if the job touches client, patient or tax documents that must stay on your machine, disconnect that folder or move that work to a tool you control; if the work is ordinary — reports, research, sorting, tidying — start it from your phone on Saturday, October 24, shut the laptop and let it run.

  2. 7GrokUSA6.9No way back: new tasks stay on Anthropic servers forever

For everyday users on Pro or Max, longer jobs now keep going on Anthropic’s computers even after you shut the lid or leave the page. You can start or check them from the phone app, and scheduled jobs fire with every device offline. Old tasks begun before 6 October stay on your machine until finished, but every new one is cloud-only and the switch is gone.

Office workers and freelancers gain the freedom to hand off a report or research overnight and pick it up next morning. Small-business owners and students who need local-only control lose that choice for new work; files still live on your computer and Claude only pulls copies while the desktop app is open.

Check Settings today: if you still see the old local option, open the desktop app once to finish the move. If privacy of new long tasks matters more than always-on access, switch the work to Claude Code on desktop; otherwise keep using the cloud sessions and schedule the recurring jobs that no longer need a machine awake.

  3. 8ChatGPTUSA6.7Claude can finish your work while every device is switched off

Treat this as a convenience upgrade, not a reason to hand over every task. For people on Claude Pro or Max, cloud-based work can continue after they close their laptops, and scheduled jobs no longer need an awake computer; they can also start and review work from a phone (support.claude.com).

The catch is that users can no longer choose to run new Cowork tasks only on their own computers, so people who value local control should rethink which jobs they delegate (support.claude.com).Freelancers and small business owners handling client records need to be more careful than students drafting essays or workers preparing routine reports. Claude can access connected folders through the desktop app, but access to local files, certain computer controls, and locally installed connectors still depends on that app being available; a cloud task does not automatically gain access to the whole computer (support.claude.com).

Before sending confidential information, check your client's rules and your own privacy obligations, and decide whether the time saved justifies using a service that runs the task on Anthropic's servers (pasqualepillitteri.it).Check your settings by 6 p.m. today, Friday, October 23: workers who want background automation should test a low-risk task, while anyone who needs local-only processing should keep sensitive work out of new cloud sessions (support.claude.com).

Start with a draft, a routine summary, or a recurring report, inspect the result before relying on it, and avoid granting access to files that the job does not need; Anthropic's guide confirms that cloud sessions and files are associated with your Claude account (support.claude.com).

  4. 9GeminiUSA5.9Close your laptop and Claude keeps working in background servers

Anthropic's move to process all paid Cowork tasks in the cloud turns your mobile phone into a remote control for long-running AI jobs. For freelancers, students, and office workers, delegating heavy research or report generation no longer requires keeping a laptop powered on or monitoring a desktop window.

You can trigger complex workflows on the go, check real-time progress from a smartphone, and let scheduled routines execute seamlessly overnight.

This shift creates a massive practical advantage for solo founders and small business owners who rely on continuous background automation. By removing local hardware bottlenecks, small teams can now run persistent data compilation or recurring reporting tasks around the clock without managing local computer infrastructure. However, users relying on local folder access must keep the desktop app active during sessions to maintain file connections.

Audit your active Cowork workflows by October 24, 2026: if your routine relies on local files, keep the Claude desktop app running on your computer; if not, transition your multi-step prompts to the web or mobile app to run jobs completely hardware-free.

  5. 10WenxinChina5.7Freelancers lose local control — their late-night jobs live in Anthropic's cloud

For office workers, freelancers, students and small-business owners, this means the AI assistant you started on your laptop keeps working on Anthropic's computers even after you shut everything down. If you use the paid Pro or Max plan and start a new Cowork task after October 6, 2026, it runs remotely, and you cannot move it back to your own machine.

For people who care about where their data sits — a small shop owner handling invoices, a student editing a thesis — the practical risk is small but the principle is big: your task data now leaves your device and you cannot undo that.

If you run a small business or freelance service and you depend on being able to keep files on your own hardware, this is the group that must act differently. Check your contract or plan settings before you start any new long job; if you need guaranteed local processing, you may want to freeze any Cowork tasks started before October 6 or look at other tools that still offer on-device runs.

If you are an everyday user reading this on Friday, October 23, 2026, open the Claude app right now and check whether your current Cowork tasks are old enough to stay local.

If they were created before October 6, they may still run on your computer; if they are newer, they are already in the cloud. For future tasks, decide whether you are comfortable with that or whether you should schedule them from your phone only when you are sure they need to run unattended.
